Will police be allowed to break your computer? SL

The Ministry of Justice plans to adopt legislation that would in its current revision allow police to install spyware on your computer and thereby spoil and paralyze its security, if you will be a suspect. Moreover, in order to do so, they would be allowed to secretly break into your residence. With the installed spy software they would be able to monitor all your communication even if it would be otherwise encrypted.

Ambient connectivity SL

A very interesting article which argues why ambient connectivity is important and gives some nice ideas surrounding it. Ambient connectivity is connectivity between devices on a global scale which is always available, anywhere you go, an open and standardized access so that any device can easily communicate with other devices, services, servers. Currently it is really hard to create such a device, which would just be able to build upon the connectivity available, without having to deal with different connectivity issues, different ways we are connecting our devices together. Why devices have to connect differently to each other when they are physically close than when they are on different parts of the world? Today, you often can connect to the Internet and servers there, but connecting two devices together even when they are close often has to include a third party (a cloud?) to help.

wlan slovenija among supporters of principles against unchecked surveillance SL

wlan slovenija network joined supporters of International Principles on the Application of Human Rights to Communications Surveillance.

Privacy is a fundamental human right, and is central to the maintenance of democratic societies. It is essential to human dignity and it reinforces other rights, such as freedom of expression and information, and freedom of association, and is recognised under international human rights law. Activities that restrict the right to privacy, including communications surveillance, can only be justified when they are prescribed by law, they are necessary to achieve a legitimate aim, and are proportionate to the aim pursued.

IS4CWN 2013 Berlin SL

Early October, Berlin, the annual International Summit for Community Networks - IS4CWN has as always been very enjoyable, educational and fun. I have attended it now for the second time to present wlan slovenija and my wireless optical system KORUZA, gaining very interesting and positive feedback.

Here is a collection of a few thoughts and projects from the conference, but the list is by no means complete and many others should deserve mentioning as well.

Slovenian Internet Forum founded SL

On Tuesday, September 24 2013, at 15 o'clock in big hall at Ministry of Education, Science and Sport there was a public consultation with title Vloga države pri Internetu (Role of the government in Internet). wlan slovenija network participated despite not being invited. We hoped to present alternative introductory points based on our experience with Internet which we have by empowering users of Internet and not just look at them as customers of a service.

To our surprise, what looked like a small consultation, without any mention in the invitation, the event turned into founding of the Slovenian Internet Forum, which is planned to provide support to the state in decisions connected with Internet. Founding act was prepared and 1 2 3, Slovenian Internet Forum was founded. The feeling of us present in the hall was that we are there just so that somebody can check the checkbox that things were made publicly. But were they really? Why there was no word about this in advance? Why there was nothing about it in the invitation? Why there were no invitations made to participate in it? What was the process of choosing the founding members and participants? What exactly are the powers the forum has and who all can have a voice or vote in it? What is the content of the founding act? What rights and duties the government has towards the forum?

We are worried that such covert way of establishing are in contradiction to the nature of Internet. Openness and democracy are founding block of Internet. The way the forum was founded much more resembles processes when ACTA was tried to be passed.

A backup network's gateway has been deployed. Now network should be operating as usual. Please report any issues you might have. When we get main gateway back online we will now have a backup one ready for similar future occasions. At least something good out of all this. :-)

Network's Internet connection temporary down SL

As you probably have noticed, wlan slovenija network's connection into Internet is down. Network itself still works and you can connect to it, but connection to the Internet does not work. The reason is that our gateway server broke. We are working on fixing it.

DeltaLibre visit SL

Last weekend I visited DeltaLibre wireless community network near Buenos Aires in Argentina. It is a part of AlterMundi networks and map of their nodes can be seen here. They do not have much written about their network or technologies online, so it was even more interesting to learn about the network first-hand.
